Information for GPs/Referrers

Our pledge

Dear health professionals reading this:

We invite you to join the growing voice of bariatric professionals standing up for our patients with obesity. How we have been practising must change. We should actively address the weight stigma towards our patients who suffer from the disease ‘obesity’ and provide them the treatment that they deserve.

The following resources can be of help:

  • Australian Obesity Management Guidelines,

  • Canadian Obesity Management Guidelines,

  • SCOPE certification from the World Obesity Federation.

What to expect from us

We will provide a detailed obesity consultation that will help you to better understand your patient’s obesity and a treatment guide map forward. After a short course of follow-up, we expect the patients to have follow-up with you, the patient’s GP. Obesity is a life-long chronic medical disease. You are in the perfect position to help and guide the patient. Please feel free to ask questions regarding the patient’s care. If you have any concerns, we are more than happy to see the patient again to guide them along.

Bariatric surgery follow-up advice/guidance

Thank you for supporting your patient who has had bariatric surgery. As you know, patients who have had surgical weight loss may develop complicated problems ranging from vitamin deficiencies to acute surgical complications. If you have any urgent concerns, you should contact the patient’s bariatric surgeon, no matter how far along the patient is from his/her surgery.

For all other concerns, please feel free to contact us at admin@medicalweightsolutions.co.nz

We have put together some resources to guide you through the follow-up process. Please visit the ‘Blog’ section of our website for more information on:

  • Annual blood tests

  • Medications after bariatric surgery

  • Multivitamins

  • Pregnancy

  • Long-term Post-operative Issues

Please note that post-operative protocols may differ between bariatric surgical practices. We hope that this website benefits you too as healthcare professionals. Thank you for your interest in learning more about obesity and its treatment options.
